5 Basic Things Your Horse Needs

Caring for a horse can be one of the most difficult and most rewarding experiences. Your horse will quickly become a beloved part of your world. You will want to take as good care of him as you possible can. Here are just the basics that you’ll need to think about.

1.    Water

Just like every other living creature on the planet, water is essential to overall health and wellbeing. A horse can drink up to 15 gallons per day. Your horse should have easy access to fresh, clean water at all times. You’ll need to check his water source often and make sure it’s clean and the right temperature.

2.    Food

Horses are grazers. They can spend between 17-20 hours a day just eating. Make sure you have a large enough pasture to fulfill his grazing habits. Your horse should eat around 1-2% of his entire body weight every day. For a normal size horse, that’s around 10-20 pounds of food.

3.    Companionship

Horses are herd animals. They don’t like to be alone. Your horse will be infinitely happier if he is able to live with other horses. Finding horses that all get along may be difficult, but it’s definitely worth the effort. You can’t be his everything.

4.    Shelter

Providing a sturdy, safe place for protection from the weather is important. Don’t coop him up though. Horses were made to roam. Just ensure that he has somewhere to get out of the freezing rain or blistering heat, and he’ll be a happy horse indeed.
